Master the Tempest is Raging
Last Sunday, my roommates and I went to a musical meeting where a pianist and violinist played a beautiful arrangement of one of my favorite hymns, Master the Tempest is Raging. This hymn is one my favorites because it really seems to describe my life sometimes. The words describe being tossed around by life. Around now with all the midterms and projects, I sometimes really feel that I am completely on for the ride and completely out of control of my life. But as the scriptures remind us, Christ is Lord over all the things in this world and he can bring peace. I have faith that if he can bring peace to the elements and calm the waves. He can calm the waves in my life and calm my troubled soul. This brings me great comfort to know that if I don't feel in control, there is still one who I can count on to help pilot me through the turbulent storms of life. This hymn is one of my favorites as well. I really love the comfort that it brings. Especially when school is in session, it is easy to get caught up in the stress and panic of college. I find, however, that when I am truly leaning on the Lord, life is SO much easier. There are some instances when we can't do things by ourselves. That is where the Savior can calm the tempest and give us a safe port to recover in. I have a testimony of this.
Mary Baker has written a fine gospel song about an incident in the Gospels. And the storm faced by the disciples on the Sea of Galilee mirrors other kinds of storms we can have in our lives. The key idea is that the Lord Jesus is "Master" of them all.
I notice you refer folks to the Cyber Hymnal to see the hymn. A friend of mine developed that site about 13 years ago, and I've contributed to it many times over the years. But someone came along and helped himself to all the data, without permission, setting up a rival site. My friend was forced to change the address of his website as a result.
